Our History

In 1994, the seed to form XL Scales Ltd was sown.

This was chiefly driven by the fact that unless ISO accreditation was achieved, continuing working with another local scales company could result in the loss of customers.

With the focus on customer satisfaction it was clear to the existing Directors, Dave and Ian, that an opportunity to ‘go it alone’ could not be missed.

Operating from a single business unit, in May 1995 XL Scales began trading.

Gradual growth and expansion saw the need to secure a second business unit to form a workshop and separate offices.

As the years have gone by the company has risen to meet the increasingly high standards set by some of our larger customers. However, these high levels of service are offered to all customers regardless of size.

We were proud to achieve ISO accreditation on 15th July 1996 and are now an ISO 9001 2015 accredited company. We also achieved SafeContractor accreditation on 31st January 2018.


Our Company

The ‘XL’ in our company name originally represented the desire to ‘excel’ in the weighing scales industry. Expanding to include the ‘Extra Large’ range of products and services that we offer. We would also like to think ‘Extra Large’ represents our company personality.

Whether you’re speaking to our accounts department or dealing with an engineer, you’ll find us an extremely friendly and approachable team.

Our People

Experience coupled with innovation.

Dave has worked in the weighing industry since 1952. He has seen the evolution from purely mechanical scales, to electronic as the trade has changed over the years. Although you won’t see him on-site anymore, he is still very much involved in our company activities.

Equally Ian has many years’ experience within the trade. Initially his role was as a Service Engineer, but over time his role has changed to managerial. However, he’s not averse to getting his hands dirty!

Company Secretary Helen joined the company on day one, closely followed by Admin Assistant Glenys. In turn they bring a jovial and friendly atmosphere to the team. Not only have they become close friends/allies, but their genuine warmth has enabled them to forge close working relationships with both customers and suppliers.

Our team also includes a younger generation of Service Engineers who ensure we keep up to date with a modern approach and the latest industry innovations. Our suppliers and manufacturers hold dealer meetings where new products are showcased and demonstrated, also Service Workshops are attended.
